The Weekend Summarized
Without stepping on ladyat's toes, a brief summary from the weekend to now:

- Traveled to Valparaiso to see msminlr's daughter well and truly nuptialized. J is an excellently budding photographer with a very good eye for line and composition. When he's old enough to really get to know the equipment and capabilities he's got a future there, I think. That's without bias, by the way. Really.

- Before wedding, zipped the extra 20 minutes up to Indiana Dunes State Park to give J his first sight of Lake Michigan. Went from standing in surf looking at the Chicago skyline to the top of the nearest coastal dune, then back to the car with sand-filled clothing.

- After wedding and reception, played some music in the room with ladyat and msminlr, though the day and the revelry made for an early night.

- Next morning, hopped on the South Shore line and trained into Chicago for the day. Took J to Shedd Aquarium and a brief visit to the Field Museum (long enough to see Sue, the Mythic Creatures exhibit, and the Egyptian exhibit). Did _not_ fall asleep while driving home, though ladyat had to drive the last 15 minutes.

- grilled corn on the cob Monday night for dinner. Mmmmmmmmmm.

- Saw Journey to the Center of the Earth last night - worth $4 but certainly not a penny more.

Ahead - the Indiana State Fair, GenCon, and many local trips to the Indy Zoo, Childrens' Museum, &c.

Am definitely missing being in London for the GBBF - cheers to all of you (like highstone) who get to be there.

Also kind of missing going to Worldcon, but have to admit that I don't like it being this early in August. There's too much going on around here we would be missing if we were there.

Randy and Shaina will be at Gencon. I will not be. (Neither games nor anime being my cup of tea.)

I'm interested in trading jpgs with J.
Especially if *he* caught the cake-cutting while I was changing batteries.

I won't be at Worldcon either. It's very weird just to hear about it being this early in August. I assume the weekend was moved because it's so difficult to get adequate convention space over Labor Day weekend, but it's still just wrong.

I think
it had more to do with a convention coming up there?

The first Early August Worldcon in recent memory was Bucconeer, and I believe the decision was made due to hotel conflict and in response to rising pressure from parents to have it earlier since school doesn't wait until after Labor Day to begin any more.

Bids now specify the early August dates more often than not. Denver also was concerned about potential conflict with the Republican National Convention, but the early August dates seemed to help that.

The good news is that Anticipation (Montreal), Australia, and Seattle are all traditional Labor Day weekend.
