Nota Bene: Now THIS is Getting COLD.
Went out to sweep the snow off the walks and porches.

4° F (-15° C) on the thermometer but a steady wind making it more like -15° F (-26° C) on the skin.

Note to Self: Please purchase the gloves that really work instead of the ones that just look good.
Current Mood: coldcold

Apparently someone predicted that we will get -17C tomorrow in the UK. The Met Office, unsurprisingly, have not given this prediction much weight (they do predict snow tomorrow, with overnight low of around -1C)...

Mittens! Gloves aren't worth crap when it gets really cold. In a glove it's every finger for itself. In mittens, the boys help keep each other warm.

I've been wearing knit convertible fingerless glove mittens, and really like them. Fingerless mode for fiddling with keys, cameras, etc, and mittens for warmth. For severe cold, snow shoveling, etc. I've got a pair of heavy snowmobiling mitts.

Even better
Hunting stores have both the ones unkbear noted above, and mittens that house full-fingered (albeit thin) gloves underneath, with a pocket for those little iron filing heaters.

The hunters in my family swear by them.
