Le Plunge Est Taken
ladyat and I signed our names on the bazillion dotted lines yesterday. We are now the proud owers (sic) of three mortgages (one in Atlanta and two in Danville).

This has been both a scary and exhilarating event. In many ways, this represents our entire new outlook on our future (which, contrary to indications, is not to be in eternal debt).

Our inspiration comes from those of our friends who looked at their lives and said, "We can live better than this" - not money, not things, but lifestyle. In some cases, the move proved to be a learning experience, while in others it proved to be the best of all possible worlds. Our inspiration is not based on the result, it is based on the courage it took for these folks to take control of their lives and buck the common opinion. You all know who you are, and we once again give you our thanks and love for helping to show us the way.

For the next few months we will be in the same kind of tight financial circumstances we were in while our kids were in college. This may (and probably will) curtail our ability to travel - though I have set some financial goals to allow such travel, they represent the top limit of achievement and therefore will only happen if all goes perfectly (i.e. if I have no learning experiences along the way *grin*). Obviously, I am working toward those top goals, but my abilities in that arena remain to be seen.

A final note: just minutes before we we were to leave our house in Danville to come home, I was puttering in the basement looking for the power cord for the outside carriage lamp. I found it and headed back upstairs but stopped on the way to investigate some things left underneath a workbench.

I found a box of trains.

Thanks for the sign, m'Lord & Lady.

Sending you support, good wishes and a very exciting Yay!!!!

And "bucking the common opinion"?? I can relate, so relate to that.

You two are fabulous people and I can't wait to see you more often.

Nothing, nothing, nothing is more important than making your dreams real.

I second that!

In some cases, the move proved to be a learning experience, while in others it proved to be the best of all possible worlds. Our inspiration is not based on the result, it is based on the courage it took for these folks to take control of their lives and buck the common opinion.

I don't know if we're among those people, I sort of doubt it, but I really appreciated reading this because at least I can look at our "learning experience" and say "it took courage". We're still digging out financially but I don't know if we'd be in much better shape if we'd stayed put and killed ourselves to make mortgage payments... and man did we learn a LOT about ourselves both individually and as a couple.

It's a damned good thing too because life really has been very rough for us. I just figure it will all balance out someday. We plug ahead and try to follow a plan/dream/goal and trust that we will pass through harder times into easier ones and that someday we'll have some easier years. Meanwhile we count our blessings because while it may be rough? We have a lot of love.

Good luck! Keep us posted. (I'm still somewhat confused on if the plan is to move there sooner or to wait a bit)

As I understood bedlamhouse's earlier posts, they're trapped in the mortgage in Marietta for another two years by a hefty early-payoff penalty, so they can't just up and sell that place. On the other hand, ladyat can't just up and change jobs on a moment's notice either.

The plan is to furnish the Danville place gradually (Either bedlamhouse or ladyat commented that they've only got about three rooms of furniture currently that are truly suitable for it) and use it as a second home for the time being. By the time they can sell the place in Marietta without a penalty they'll have a better fix on what-all the options are vis-a-vis being snowbirds or Nawthunuhs.

MY big question is, who is the lucky fan who gets to be their house-sitter?

HO.

They aren't that old (though there are a couple of metal-body cars I'm interested in investigating further) but it's the principle of the thing...

I know that we felt as though we were taking a step into an unknowable void when we moved here.

It has been the best and healthiest move that we could ever have taken, and I hope that yours proves the same.

Blessings on your homes :-)

When we regain a measure of financial independance then we'll be over like a shot!

All the best to you and ladyat. I wish wistfully that I could be there to see your house and hand you bread and wine and salt to bless it with....

I'm doing it in my head, does that count? :)

Congratulations on taking the next step towards Land Baron! :)

Nothing is really happening up here, so we'll be happy to move in and keep the house company while you work out logistics. :)
