War of the Worlds
(No, not the movie)

I neglected to mention that my lovely and talented wife ladyat gave me a copy of the new remastered Jeff Wayne "War of the Worlds" for my birthday.

It is still what I believe to be the definitive adaptation.

Now to get the 6-CD full version with the extra Richard Burton material ...

The original CD version was, from all reports, terrible. I got the wife a remix that came out 5-10 years ago and it was quite good. It seems to have all the tracks that the newer version has. I'm wondering how the sound is though. I'm also thinking about the 6 CD version since I mentioned it to the wife and she was darn enthused.

I've played the version we have several years on Radio Capricon. Great stuff.

Don't know about the previous versions, but this one seems fantastic. I don't have SACD, but the disc is supposed to have both the standard and SACD versions on separate layers.

The standard version I am listening to on my office Aiwa system is clean, mix seems well handled and not squeezed (though it has been years since I listened to my LP version). Dynamics are good, drums are punchy but not crunchy, bass is solid but not overpowering. I'm not hearing any cleanup artifacts or frequency bending.

Separating it into 2 CDs based on the original split ("The Coming of the Martians" and "Earth Under the Martians") works.

Sounds like the CD mix is pretty much the same as the version I have. It would be interesting to hear the SACD mix though.

I don'd know about the 'original' CD version, the one I had was the first CD version released in the UK and that was about the same as the LP (except without the pops, hiss etc.), I think it was taken from the LP final master tapes (just before cutting). So it still had the same compression as the LP version but otherwise was cleaner. I'll look out for the new remastered one.

(And yes, I agree, that is still the definitive interpretation of the book...)

Does your's have the extra tracks? If so that is the later reissue. Which sounds like it has the same mix as the newer SACD version. (the version I have is real good)

No, mine had exactly the same tracks as the LP, taken I think from the LP master tapes immediately before cutting the pressing discs (no remixing or editing, only CD track markings added). CD case inserts etc. facsimiles of the LP ones (i.e. some of the text only readable with magnification).

I'm not sure where it is at present (I think in one of the boxes of stuff that seem to periodically appear, disappear and reappear with different contents, there's a feral spacewarp in my house)...
