It Just Might Be Cricket
While I don't want to count my chickens before the ticket arrives at chez fleetfootmike, I think I managed to score a ticket for the third day of the Old Trafford test England v Australia.

I had actually bid on a single ticket for the wrong day. In communicating with the owner of the ticket after I won the bid, I found out he was going to be unable to go on Saturday as well. By having the seller use the eBay "Second Chance Offer" provision to offer the wrong-day ticket to the next highest bidder, I was able to arrange swapping the Thursday ticket for the Saturday ticket. Though I won't be completely at ease until the Mike tells me the ticket has safely arrived and is for the right day.

I have been having a good time in class this week winding up one of my work teammates, who is from Australia and quite a cricket fan. I suppose I should be nicer to him in order to make sure that the Gods of Karma get me my ticket OK and that I don't make a fool out of myself alone at the ground on the day, but it's so much fun that I can't resist. (Aside: we've come to the conclusion this week that you can take a dictionary, open it to any random page, then blindly choose any word. Said word will turn out to be Australian slang for either sex or drinking.)

Today's performance by England in the first test was both amazing and annoying. Who would have expected them to close out the Aussies' first innings with only 190 runs - then turn around and end the day at a pitiful 92 for 7 on a last-ball wicket from Giles treading on his own stumps?

I think I like cricket because the England side is so much like the Cubs ...
