Here, There, and Everywhere
Little bit of catch-up as we rocket toward GAFilk (at which I hope to see many of you and am also saddened that many of you will not be able to attend)...

New Year's party was a bit smaller than we expected this year. Looks like we may have to actively remind people in early December that it exists again. We were outnumbered by Aaron's buddies who show up and generally take over the basement - and the realization that your youngest son's friends are pretty much all over 21 and eligible to be the "first foot" is sometimes rather striking...

New Year's Day was slow and easy. We took plenty of time doing clean up (one room at a time) and getting breakfast (brunch, actually). Played a few games of Carcassonne, a game or two of Before I Kill You Mr. Bond, and a game of Chrononauts (including the Early American edition).

At this point, my biggest resolution for the year is to try to relax a little bit about getting things done. My work requires hard deadlines that are often already past by the time I am given responsibility for the issue, and there is simply no reason for me to put that kind of pressure on myself in my home life. I have always tried to have all my work done before I relaxed or "played" - sort of a Heartland Work Ethic thing going there - and I've finally admitted that there is just too much work for this to be possible. I don't know if I'll be any good at trying to mix some fun in with the work, because I always feel extremely guilty when there are things I'm supposed to be doing that I am ignoring, but I'm going to give it a try.

With any luck, this attitude will allow me to spend some more time doing things I really haven't done in years, like practice the instruments I already know, learn a few new ones, write some songs, and (most importantly) be able to point to at least part of each day that I can truly say I enjoyed.

I bought our tickets for the UK for the filk con (said trip including the Evil American bid for the 18th UK filkcon and a meeting with the programming head for WorldCon), so we're already anticipating another chance to see even more of our friends.

GAFilk will be somewhat smaller, as we know of many people who will not be able to make it due to work committments and monetary issues. For those of you who are coming, we will be doing some additional fund raising for the American Red Cross Tsunami Relief fund - bring spare change or crinkly bits of paper.

May each and every one of us be filled with joy and surrounded by peace this year. So Mote It Be.

Early American edition of Chrononauts, did you say? Just checked the Looney Labs page -- gotta grab that one at Arisia!
