Finally Consistent Recording Results
Most of my spare time in the last week has been spent trying to beat my music-focused PC into submission in regards to making accurate copies of Audio CDs for use as masters. The problem has not been the audio tracks, which came out very good, it has been the ISRC subchannel which has been a real pain to write properly.

To make a long story short, it turned out to be the Sony 510A CD/DVD writer which did not seem to like writing subchannels accurately.

I first tried to upgrade to the Sony 530A, but tried two different drives without being able to successfully write to them using Sony's own diagnostic software.

I finally switched to the Plextor 712, which worked first time and every time. Yippee!

The only bad thing is that the Plextor "tweak and copy and do all kinds of cool stuff" software can't handle any other devices on the same IDE channel. So, I can't copy straight from CD to CD. I can live without that.

Now, I just need to rebuild everything that I tore apart when stripping out WinDoze XP and all drivers in order to make sure it wasn't a driver or software conflict problem.

Meanwhile, I now have clean and certified copies of the master for Hair Of the Frog and we're ready to go to the duplicators.

The track may be OK, you could just be getting dropouts or problems on playback.

If the instrumental track is MIDI, then it is possible that the resources needed to run the synth associated with the midi track aren't leaving enough for the vocal to be played back cleanly.

It also could be that the midi playback is affecting the clocking used to playback the vocals.

This could also be the problem if the instrumental is actually recorded rather than midi recorded - if the clock speeds don't match between the tracks, you might get garbage out.

If you play the vocal track by itself (you might have to create a new project with just the vocal track loaded) does it play OK?

Next project going in the studio will be quadrivium's CD. This one is scheduled to take a while because it's going to be lush and complicated and lots of fun.

When khaosworks gets back I'm hoping he'll have a chance to get the transport from Athens sorted out so we can finish his as well.

At the current sales rate, I'm expecting to need to run a second edition of "Rite the First Time" by the end of the year.

The rest - well, I've gotten way behind on marketing and publicity ...
